Farma Match - Inge Louf van Oy: “Extensive market research is crucial”

Today we are speaking with Inge Louf , the founder of Oy Care , an innovative company that focuses on cosmetics as a problem-solver. As an entrepreneur, Inge has a clear mission: to make a difference in the lives of her customers. We're curious about the story behind Oy Care, the challenges she's overcome along the way, and her future plans. And of course, we'll ask her for a top tip for other entrepreneurs.

Inge, can you tell us a bit more about the mission behind Oy Care and why you
decided to start this company?

Inge:
As a pharmacist, I was motivated to develop a product that truly impacts everyday discomforts like sweat odor and more niche skin problems like acne, eczema, and rosacea. The goal wasn't to temporarily mask symptoms, but to address the underlying causes and thus sustainably improve the user's self-confidence.

I always found it strange to wash myself with shower soap in the morning, use a good deodorant afterward, and still smell of sweat on a stressful day. That didn't work the way I wanted! That's how my interest in a scientific approach to the core of the problem arose. Hence our baseline: Hygiene done differently.

That's why I developed Oy Care as a "Pré-odorant" : a product that actively targets the bacteria that cause odor, even before it develops. Most deodorants mask odor or block sweat production, but we focus on maintaining healthy skin flora by eliminating overgrown bacteria.

The same approach applies to acne: instead of focusing on drying out pimples, we focus on regulating sebum production and reducing acne-causing bacteria. As a pharmacist, my goal is to restore and maintain the balance of the skin microbiota.

Our clinical studies have demonstrated that Oy is effective, both in controlled laboratory conditions and in daily use. Thanks to a carefully balanced combination of active ingredients and an advanced formulation, Oy offers an innovative and scientifically proven solution for various skin problems. The fact that we can develop all of this in our own laboratory and produce it in Belgium according to the strictest GMP standards is something we are very proud of.

What was your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur when you started Oy Care, and how did you overcome it?

Inge:
As a pharmacist, I'm passionate about developing new formulas, but this entails long testing phases without any immediate revenue streams. It was a stressful period, especially because you invest heavily without knowing for sure if it will be successful.

To minimize this uncertainty, we first conducted thorough market research to confirm the market potential for our innovative approach to body odor. We also have to comply with strict regulations: a complete, EU-compliant product file is required for every cosmetic product, and every formulation must be approved by experts. Our production takes place in Belgium and complies with GMP guidelines, guaranteeing the highest quality and safety standards.

A valuable support was the An innovation grant from VLAIO , which required a rigorous application process, including a presentation to a jury, gave us confidence in Oy's potential. Establishing Oy required long days and weekends of work, but exercise and yoga allowed me to maintain a healthy balance.

What will Oy Care focus on in the coming years? What are your future plans for the company?

Inge:
We continue to monitor the market and the latest scientific insights to develop new products. For example, we're currently working on innovative formulas, such as our " gel-to-milk " cleanser. It contains neither water nor foam, which is proven to be less damaging to the skin barrier.

We also strive to make our solutions available throughout Europe so more people can experience the benefits of Oy. Our goal is to always offer the most effective and skin-friendly products, backed by science.

Entrepreneurship comes with many ups and downs. What would you say has been your biggest struggle, and how do you stay motivated to keep going?

Inge:
Formulating the Oy Deo Wash required no less than 271 attempts before I found the ideal composition. This requires enormous perseverance and patience.

I received tremendous support from my family; my two sons have been involved in the family business from the very beginning, and we complement each other very well. In addition, my girlfriend, an entrepreneur, gave me Conny Vandendriessche She gave me a push at the right times and was involved in the formation of our advisory board.

Finding the right distribution channel was also a challenge. Because Oy is a recommended product, we offer it through pharmacies. This is a great opportunity for pharmacists to recommend a reliable, local brand. Thanks to the positive results, satisfied customers return to their regular pharmacist.

Finally, do you have a golden tip for other entrepreneurs who want to start their own business in the healthcare or welfare sector?

Inge:
Extensive market research is crucial. Enthusiastic feedback from those around you can be valuable, but an objective analysis is essential to truly evaluate your product's market potential.

Surround yourself with experts in your field and form an advisory board. You also need to get a handle on your figures; insight into them is a lever for growth. As Véronique Bockstal says: “Success does not come from one giant leap, but from many small steps taken with determination and perseverance.”

Conclusion:

We would like to thank Inge for sharing her inspiring entrepreneurial story. Her
passion and perseverance are a great example for anyone who wants to
wants to make dreams come true in the health and welfare sector.
